Complete Guide to Windshield Damage

A practical guide to windshield chips, cracks, repair, replacement and the details to have ready when you call Tony’s.

Illustrative windshield repair

Windshield damage usually begins with a simple question: can this be repaired, or does the glass need to be replaced? The answer depends on the real damage. Size matters, but so do the type, location, age and condition of the impact or crack.

Common types of windshield damage

A windshield can be damaged by road debris, a sudden impact, temperature stress or another event that weakens the glass. What looks like one simple chip can have different shapes and depths.

Stone chips and impact marks

A stone chip often has a small centre point with short lines or a shallow crater around it. Some chips remain contained. Others begin to send a crack away from the impact point. A clean, limited chip may be a better repair candidate than damage that has already spread.

Short and long cracks

A crack is a line that travels through the glass. Its length, position and path matter. A short crack in one location may be assessed differently from a long crack, a crack reaching an edge or damage crossing the driver’s main viewing area.

Damage near the edge

The edge of the windshield is part of the area where the glass is supported and bonded to the vehicle. Damage close to an edge can respond differently to stress, vibration and temperature changes. The technician needs to see the actual location before confirming the service.

When windshield repair may be possible

Repair may be considered when the damage is limited, stable and otherwise suitable. The purpose of repair is to treat the damaged area and help prevent it from developing further. It does not guarantee that every visible mark will disappear.

Tony’s considers several details:

  • The type and size of the impact
  • The location of the damage
  • Whether a crack has begun to spread
  • The age and cleanliness of the damaged area
  • The condition of the surrounding glass

When replacement may be the better path

Replacement may be recommended when the damage is extensive, badly positioned, connected with an edge, present in several areas or no longer suitable for repair. The decision should be explained in plain language and based on the real windshield.

The correct replacement also needs to match the vehicle. Windshields can differ by year, make, model, trim and fitted equipment. Some vehicles have cameras, sensors, heating elements or other features associated with the windshield area. Tony’s will confirm the glass and service requirements that apply to the vehicle.

Why a chip or crack can spread

Damaged glass already contains a weak point. Normal driving conditions can place stress around it.

Temperature changes

Glass expands and contracts as temperatures change. Sudden heating or cooling can add stress around existing damage, especially during seasonal weather changes.

Road vibration and body movement

Rough roads, potholes, gravel, construction zones and normal vehicle movement all create vibration. A healthy windshield is designed to handle normal loads. Existing damage creates a path where stress can travel.

Moisture, dirt and another impact

Moisture and road film can enter damaged areas over time. Another small strike can also add stress, even when it does not hit the exact same spot.

What to do after you notice windshield damage

  1. Look at where the damage sits and whether a line has started to spread.
  2. Avoid pressing, picking or applying an unapproved product to the damaged area.
  3. Have the vehicle year, make and model ready.
  4. Call Tony’s and describe what happened in ordinary language.

You do not need to know the technical name of the damage. A clear description and the vehicle details are enough to begin the conversation.

Questions drivers often ask

Can every windshield chip be repaired?

No. Repair suitability depends on the actual damage and its position.

Does repair make the chip invisible?

Not always. The purpose is to treat suitable damage. The cosmetic result depends on the original impact, age, contamination and location.

Does every crack require replacement?

No. The condition and location of the crack need to be assessed before the appropriate service can be confirmed.

Can the decision be made from a phone description?

A phone conversation helps Tony’s understand the situation. A final recommendation may require seeing the windshield.
