Vehicle Windows

Why Won’t My Power Window Go Up?

A power window that will not go up can leave the vehicle exposed to rain, dust, theft, and cold weather. The symptom is obvious. The cause may not be.

Illustrative power window repair

A power window that will not go up can leave the vehicle exposed to rain, dust, theft, and cold weather. The symptom is obvious. The cause may not be.

Several parts work together to move the glass.

The window regulator

The regulator is the mechanism that raises and lowers the glass.

A worn or damaged regulator can cause the window to move slowly, tilt, drop, bind, or stop. Some failures create grinding or clicking sounds. Others allow the motor to run while the glass does not move correctly.

Tony’s can assess the symptoms and explain the appropriate next step for the vehicle.

The motor

The electric motor provides the movement.

A failing motor may become slow, intermittent, or silent. A window that works sometimes and fails at other times may still need a full assessment. The switch, wiring, and mechanism can create similar symptoms.

The switch

A damaged or worn switch can stop the command from reaching the system.

It may affect one window or several, depending on the vehicle and which switch is used. A switch problem should not be assumed until the rest of the system is checked.

Wiring or electrical problems

Broken wiring, damaged connections, fuses, or control modules can also interrupt power-window operation.

Electrical and mechanical symptoms can overlap, so the vehicle needs to be assessed before the failed part is confirmed.

Glass alignment

The glass can become misaligned or come off track.

Customers may notice the glass tilting, catching, moving unevenly, or leaving a gap. Forcing the switch may not solve the problem.

Frozen or obstructed glass

Ice, debris, damaged seals, or another obstruction can prevent normal movement.

If the window is frozen, forcing the motor can place extra strain on the system.

What to tell the shop

Describe the symptom in ordinary language:

  • The window is stuck open
  • The window is stuck closed
  • The motor makes noise
  • The glass moves slowly
  • The glass moves crookedly
  • The switch works intermittently
  • The glass dropped into the door

Also provide the vehicle year, make, model, and affected door.

Avoid forcing a jammed window

Repeated operation may place more strain on a failing mechanism. If the glass is moving badly or making unusual noise, stop forcing it and arrange an assessment.
